Rhythm is an expression of mathematical properties with countless permutations and combinations. For each pattern, numerous additional derivative patterns can be generated that are only shades of difference apart. Rhythm is a very large universe of opportunities and is difficult to navigate without a system to track where we have been, where we are going, and what unexplored rhythmic landscapes remain to be exploited.    

I taught guitar which devevloped the experience of teaching improvisation as a method to generate arrangements to songs on-the-fly. The student would navigate the arrangement by singing the melody, changing the guitar chords, and improvising the strumming to fit the song.   

Years later I moved into computers, programming, and telecommunications network engineering and used these skills to teach computer software how to improvise music. This lead to the development of clever algorithms which are little software logic machines that could step through the mechanics of improvising rhythmic accompaniment and even melody to auto generate compositions. This was an exciting phase in which I found I could create software to command and control numerous virtual musicians all at the same time. I was no longer limited to just one instrument at a time. The algorithms I developed operate similar to a navigation system. By selecting various rhythm properties we use them as coordinates to explore different areas of rhythm. We are able to steer ourselves into unfamiliar territories and map the rhythmic geographies we want to use for our own personal "rhythmic signature". 

The experience I gained from designing sofware to simulate music began to influence my personal improvisation on keyboard. I found I had access to greater rhythmic diversity and opportunity than  I did before when I was a guitar instructor. Now I can share these insights with other musicians.
